The Barnevelder is a handsome Dutch heritage breed, best known for its rich double-laced plumage and its warm, dark brown eggs. The classic variety shows a chestnut-brown ground with a distinct black double lacing on each feather, set off by a greenish sheen, making it one of the more striking traditional breeds to keep. It is a dual-purpose bird, sound in body and well suited to a back-garden flock.
Barnevelders are calm, steady birds that are easy to handle and tolerate confinement well, though they are equally content ranging. As a heritage breed they lay more modestly than the commercial hybrids, but they make up for it with their good looks, their deep brown eggs and their reliable winter laying. They are hardy and placid, and their quiet nature makes them a pleasant breed for keepers who value character as much as production.
