Dark chocolate-brown eggs, good steady layer

The Barred Maran is best known for its handsome black-and-white barred plumage and, above all, for the deep chocolate-brown eggs the breed is famous for. Our barred hybrid Marans carry that classic cuckoo-style barring, where each feather is crossed with bands of dark and light, giving the bird a smart, speckled grey appearance in the run. They are a good medium to large size with a calm, grounded manner.

Marans originate from the town of the same name in western France and have long been prized for the colour of their eggs more than for sheer numbers. As a hybrid layer the Barred Maran offers a dependable supply of those rich brown eggs along with the breed's typically quiet temperament. They are robust, content to forage and make a striking addition to a mixed flock.
