The Call Duck is the smallest of the domestic duck breeds, a true bantam waterfowl with a short, rounded body, a small body weight and a notably short, stubby bill on a neat round head. Originally bred for their loud, carrying voice to lure wild ducks within range of hunters and decoys, they retain that famously vocal nature today. Their tiny size and bright, busy personalities have made them one of the most popular ornamental and pet ducks kept in gardens.
They are characterful, tame and sociable birds that become very friendly with regular handling, and they do well in smaller spaces than the larger breeds, needing only a modest pond or bowl of water to dabble and preen. Prospective keepers should know that Call Ducks are genuinely noisy, particularly the females, so they suit homes where the sound will not be a problem for close neighbours. They are best kept in pairs or small groups for company, and they make charming, manageable additions to a back garden flock.
