The Cochin is one of the most distinctive of the heavy heritage breeds, instantly recognised by its rounded, fluffy outline and the profuse soft feathering that covers the body right down the legs and feet. Originally brought to Britain from China in the mid-nineteenth century, the breed caused a great stir among Victorian poultry keepers and helped spark the fashion for keeping ornamental fowl. A mature Cochin carries a great deal of loose plumage, which makes the bird look considerably larger than it actually is and gives it a calm, ponderous appearance.
Cochins are gentle, slow-moving birds that settle well into a back garden or smallholding flock. The heavy foot feathering means they cope poorly with wet, muddy conditions, so they do best on dry ground or with a sheltered run. Hens are notably broody and make excellent, attentive mothers, which is one reason the breed is still valued by those who want a natural incubator. They are not strong fliers and are easily contained behind a low fence, making them a sensible choice for keepers who want a quiet, manageable bird with real character.
