The Light Sussex is one of the most recognisable and best-loved of the traditional British breeds, here offered as a dependable hybrid layer. She is a smart, dignified bird: clean white in the body with a striking black collar of neck hackle and black markings in the tail, set off by a bright red comb. Good in size and full in the breast, she has the classic dual-purpose Sussex shape and a presence that makes her a real favourite in the garden.
As well as her good looks the Light Sussex is valued for her gentle, inquisitive character. She is calm, often tame enough to follow you round the run, and copes well with family settings and children. She lays a good number of cream to light-brown eggs and continues steadily through much of the year, making her both an ornamental and a practical choice.
