The Orpington is a large, deep-bodied heritage breed developed in Kent in the late nineteenth century and named after the town of Orpington. It is a broad, heavy bird with abundant soft feathering that gives it a rounded, full outline and makes it look even bigger than it is. The clean (unfeathered) legs and curved, generous body are characteristic, and the breed has long been a favourite both in the show pen and in the garden, with the Buff in particular becoming one of the best-loved colours in British poultry.
Orpingtons are famously docile and friendly, settling easily into family flocks and tolerating handling well, which makes them a popular choice for those keeping hens with children about. Their size and gentle, unhurried nature mean they are poor fliers and are happily contained behind a modest fence. Hens tend to go broody and make good mothers, and although they are only a moderate layer of medium to large light-brown eggs, they keep going reasonably well through the colder months. As a dual-purpose bird with a calm temperament and a handsome, substantial presence, the Orpington remains one of the most rewarding heritage breeds to keep.
