The White Runner is one of the most distinctive of all domestic ducks, standing almost vertically with a long, slender body that earns it the nickname "the wine-bottle duck." Rather than waddling, Runners walk and run upright on their legs, which makes them quick and tireless on their feet. The pure white plumage, bright orange bill and legs, and that unmistakable bowling-pin posture make them a striking sight moving across a paddock or orchard.
Runners were bred as a working, active duck rather than a heavy table bird, so they are light, lean and constantly busy. They are exceptional foragers and natural slug and snail hunters, which makes them a long-standing favourite for keeping kitchen gardens and allotments clear of pests. Because they are so active they like plenty of space to range, and although they enjoy water they need only a shallow source to bathe and keep their eyes and bills clean rather than a large pond. They rarely fly and are easy to herd, which adds to their appeal for the smallholder.
