The White Crested Duck is an ornamental breed instantly recognisable by the fluffy ball of feathers, or crest, that sits like a pompom on the top of its head. In the white form the whole bird is clean white with an orange bill and legs, and the round crest gives it a comical, characterful appearance that makes it a favourite show and garden duck. It is a medium-sized, fairly upright duck of moderate weight, calm and pleasant in temperament.
The crest is the result of a genetic feature that prospective keepers should understand, as it can be associated with reduced hatching success and means crested ducks need a little extra care in breeding and selection. The birds themselves are friendly, steady and undemanding to keep, enjoying access to water to bathe and keep the crest and plumage in good order. They are kept primarily for their looks and personality rather than for heavy egg or meat production, and they make an appealing centrepiece for a mixed waterfowl collection.
