- White eggs · very prolific layer
The White Leghorn is the classic white-egg layer, an old Mediterranean breed that has been refined into one of the most prolific laying hybrids in the world. Birds are bright white with a large single red comb, yellow legs and an upright, alert carriage. They are light and active, and at their best they are exceptionally productive layers of clean white eggs.
Leghorns are flighty and energetic rather than lap birds, so they suit keepers who want a high-yielding hen and have secure fencing or a good run, as they are capable fliers. They are economical to keep, forage well and cope well in warmer weather thanks to their large comb. With patient, regular handling they become tamer, but by nature they stay busy, watchful and quick on their feet.
